Ipernity's most striking difference from other photo sharing sites is that it is owned and managed by a non profit association made up of its own members. And it shows. It shows in the way it has designed, and recently further improved, the tastefully and cleanly organized photo display, in both the individual photo pages and in galleries. It shows in the way the community has evolved to accomodate members' needs and suggestions rather than profit-driven choices. It show in the lively, welcoming, open and fully transparent community life that benefits from the presence of members from many countries all over the world.

As a non-commercial not-for-profit platform, Ipernity does not offer things like prints and gifts, nor does it commercialize your images. It offers instead great options as to the degree of dispersion you wish to give your photos: from completely private to shared only among family and friends, to public. It allows up-loading of images, videos, documents and audio files and makes it easy to exchange comments and views at the international level by means of an integrated translation device.

I came to Ipernity from a 6 year membership at a very large, well known and widely respected site that decided, out of the blue, to switch over to Instagram (which, with all due respect, is a social media, not a photography platform): a decision based solely on the logic of profit and in complete disregard of the value of the community and the opinion of its one million photographer members. By contrast, as a member at Ipernity I get to partecipate in deciding what the community wants to be and in shaping future developments; I get to make suggestions that get heard, to vote for the governing bodies of the association and to review how members' money has been spent. All of this in addition to the opportunity to learn from others, be inspired, intrigued, stimulated by their work, offer and receive suggestions, and exchange views and feelings about our common passion. I simply cannot think of a better online "home" for my photography.

In summary, I would recommend Ipernity to a friend.
