There aren’t a lot of photo sharing sites around which let you engage with the other members to provide a community feel. Fotki is one site which does do this, offering up regular photo competitions, communication tools and sharing options which help to inspire you and keep you motivated as an artist. It also offers a wide range of membership options, although all of them are quite long.
Let’s talk about those membership options first. You can choose from 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 year membership plans. Whilst 10 year plans offer the cheapest options, it’s hard to believe that many people would want to make such a big commitment to a site, a decade before their membership would expire. Still, the option is there. You can open a free account, but to unlock the vast array of features (a list of which is provided on the Fotki.com website) you’ll probably want to upgrade.
Membership prices are pretty low, although – as we mentioned – you’ll have to take out the very long contracts to get the best price. In particular we were impressed by the community options, but you’ll also find other features worth exploring, such as mobile options, album passwords and a variety of upload methods (including E-email, Fotki desktop, iPhone, Android, Adobe Lightroom, Pixelpipe, Picasa and more).
If you’re interested in knowing what other people think of your photos, then Fotki could be a good option for you. Members can leave you comments about your work, and you can enter the regular competitions. Members vote on their favorite snaps and there are sometimes prizes to win.
The site has a lot going on, which can make it a little chaotic to navigate through. However, this is improved with a simple interface at the top of your screen which lets you quickly visit your albums, favorite parts of the site, feed, contests, blog and search. You can tag photos with names, dates, items or more, and then easily locate them by performing a search.
In short, we feel that Fotki has a lot to offer its users. If getting feedback from other photographers is important to you, and you’d like to meet like-minded people, this site certainly has something going for it. However, we did find that quite a few images were fairly poor. We were also somewhat put off by the bizarre 10 year contracts, which just seem a bit excessive. You can also order prints and gifts, though prices depend on the quantity and the sort of membership you have taken out.
